Ñ What is (and how to use) Substitute?
You can use Substitute 1.6.0 as Desktop Utility or as Mini Finder╔ see below for ideas.
Ñ Overview.
├...Main Window.

The Substitute 1.6.0 main window shows, continuously, infos about the foreground application: the name (in the window title), the Type and the Creator, the Desktop Icon, the CPU time (in seconds) accumulated, the memory allocated and, when the application switches to foreground, the free memory at that time.
Also the Substitute 1.6.0 main window shows the current date and time.
Note: the "memory allocated" is the real memory allocated by System to the application.
├...Menu File.
from this menu you can launch all the Applications and the Desk Accessories you want.
├...Menu Substitute.
from this menu by selecting "Add Application..." or "Add Desk Accessory..." you can add up to ten Applications and/or Desk Accesories, and launch them from the sub menus "Applications" & "Desk Accessories".
Note: Substitute 1.6.0 assigns a shortcut to any application you add to the sub menu "Applications" so, with a keystroke, you can launch any application filed.
├...Menu Special.
- Menu Item 'Copy/Rename': to copy/rename a single file. Substitute 1.6.0 can perform this task in background, if you want.
- Menu Item 'Move/Rename': to move/rename files and folders.
Note: If you want to move *and* rename a locked file, Substitute 1.6.0 moves it but leaving the original name. If you want to move and rename a locked file and, in the new location, a file with old name already exists, Substitute 1.6.0 leaves everything untouched: you were clearly kidding!
- Menu Item 'Rename': to rename files, folders, disks.
- Menu Item 'Delete': to delete a single file.
- Menu Item 'Make Alias': to make full aliases of files, folders, disks.
- Menu Item 'Info': to gather informations about files, folders, disks.

Tips: if you want to gather informations about alias instead of original, make sure to select the alias through the button at the bottom of Substitute 1.6.0 "Get File" dialog.
- Menu Items 'Lock' and 'Unlock': to lock/unlock single files.
- Menu Item 'Format Disk': to format (and, only on floppies, to verify in option) any HD, diskette, removable HD. As well Substitute 1.6.0 allows the disk catalog only deletion (with, only on floppies, the verify option) or simply, on floppies, to verify the disk.

├...Menu Info.
From this menu you can know any mounted volumes and the available keyboard layouts.
Note: the name of the startup volume appears checked, always.
├...Menu System.
- Sub Menu 'Change Application Font': to temporarily change the default application font.
- Sub Menu 'Change Sound Level': to change the Sound Level.
- Sub Menu 'Select a process': this sub menu shows the name of all open processes (except Substitute itself). By choosing a process you can switch it to foreground (just like the Finder's Application menu).
- Menu Item 'Close all open processes': to close, if possible, all open processes (except Substitute itself).
- Sub Menu 'Goodbye': to restart or shutdown your Macintosh.
Be careful: make sure to select the menu item 'Close all open processes', before to restart or shutdown your Macintosh. If some process remains opened remember to close it manually.
Ñ Desktop Utility.
The usage of Substitute 1.6.0 as Desktop Utility is limited only by your imagination╔it can be used to quit the Finder, as well as Launch Pad, to gather infos, to format disks, and more╔
Ñ Mini Finder.
With the release of System 7 the capability to fit more applications in an emergency diskette disappeared: the free space left by System and Finder is indeed too small. Substitute 1.6.0 can efficently replace the Finder: it has each thing you need in critical situation, besides its size is about only 44K! In this package you will find a file named Finder, it's Substitute in MiniFinder version!
To use Substitute 1.6.0 as MiniFinder simply replace the original Finder with Substitute (in MiniFinder version).
BTW, you can use Substitute 1.6.0 as MiniFinder on any media (removable, HD) not only on diskettes!
Note: when you use Substitute 1.6.0 as MiniFinder it's possible to exploit the potentiality of extensions and controls. A caveat: Substitute will not open controls.
Ñ Tips.
To eject a diskette, type command-shift-1. Also you can eject floppies and removable from any "Get File"/"Put File" dialog.
To change the keyboard layout, type command-option-space.
Ñ To do.
Target: don't exceed the 50K size.
Substitute 1.6.0 would like to have many more options, such as the scanning and mounting SCSI peripherals, or the Desktop Database management, or the Parameter RAM control, or the folders copying. This options will maybe be present in future releases, but you do not rely on this: Substitute 1.6.0 must stay small, small...anyway feel free to give me any suggestion...
Substitute 1.6.0 requires at least System 7 to run!
Substitute 1.6.0 has been tested on my Macintoshes: Powerbook 145, LCIII, Classic. Also it has been tested on Macintosh Quadra 700, LC(Quadra)630, Duo 210, Duo 280c, IIci. The testing has been performed with System 7.0, 7.1, 7.1.2, 7.5 & 7.5.1.
